Evacuation Procedures

In case of an emergency: 

STAY CLAM

DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS

ADHERE TO INSTRUCTIONS OF

RISK AND COMPLIANCE STAFF

 and follow the procedures as set out

  1. Evacuation

(a)        When the building is evacuated, all occupants must leave immediately and SHOULD:

  1. take their essential personal belongings with them, like briefcases, purses, wallets, keys, cell phones and medications
  2. turn off any heating devices, such as heaters, coffee machines and kettles

iii.        terminate telephone calls immediately

  1. keep noise levels as low as possible
  2. move on the left-hand side of the stairs
  3. evacuate to the assembly area

vii.       walk as fast as possible

viii.      assist persons with special needs

            (b)        DO NOT:

  1. turn off office equipment
  2. remove items other than essential personal belongings

                        iii.        forward telephone calls

  1. RUN

Re-entry of evacuated buildings

(a)        Do not return to the building unless instructed to do so by and Authorised person

  1. Fire/Smoke

            (a)        If smoke or fire is detected, you SHOULD:

  1. call (021) 959 2100 immediately
  2. follow the evacuation procedures, should evacuation be announced

                        iii.        stay as low as possible to avoid smoke and fumes

  1. hold a handkerchief or any other piece of cloth over your nose and mouth
  2. close windows and doors
  3. assist any person with special needs

            (b)        DO NOT:

  1. Panic

            (c)        Should you be unable to leave your office, you SHOULD:

  1. shut the door to your office, but do not lock it
  2. call (021) 959 2100 and inform them of your situation

                        iii.        Signal out your window for help

  1. Stay as low as possible

 

  1. Medical Emergencies

            (a)        When a person needs medical attention, you SHOULD:

  1. call your area first aider immediately
  2. if your area first aider is not available, call (021) 959 2100 immediately

 

  1. Aggressive or violent behaviour, civil disturbance

            (a)        In the case of aggressive, violent or armed persons, you SHOULD

  1. call (021) 959 2100 immediately
  2. move to a place of safety, if safe to do so

                        iii.        assist persons with special needs to safety, if possible

  1. remain calm and do not attract attention

(b)        DO NOT:

  1. confront or pursue violent or armed persons
  2. do anything which may put anyone’s life into danger
  3. Bomb threats

            (a)        In the case of a bomb threat you SHOULD:

  1. call (021) 959 2100 immediately
  2. remain calm, listen attentively to what the person is saying and record as much details as possible

iii.        follow the evacuation procedures, should evacuation be announced

            (b)        DO NOT:

  1. announce it to anybody before receiving instructions from

(021) 959 2100 (CPS Control Room)

 

  1. Explosions

            (a)        In the case of an explosion, you SHOULD:

  1. call (021) 959 2100 immediately
  2. follow the evacuation procedures, should evacuation be announced

 

  1. Robbery/Hostage situations

            (a)        If you observe a hostage situation or a robbery taking place, you SHOULD:

  1. call (021) 959 2100 immediately
  2. move to a safe place

            (b)        DO NOT:

  1. involve yourself

            (c)        If you are involved in a robbery or hostage situation, you SHOULD:

  1. stay calm
  2. activate strategically positioned panic buttons

                        iii.        do what you are told and no more

  1. be deliberate in your actions, avoiding sudden movements, if you are ordered to do something
  2. avoid eye contact
  3. make a mental note about everything you can about the robbery/hostage taker, such as speech, mannerisms, clothing, scars and tattoos

vii.       record your observations in writing as soon as possible after the incident

(c)        DO NOT:

  1. become involved
  2. confront or argue with the robbers/hostage takers

            iii.        do not stare at the robbers/hostage taker

 

  1. Telephonic threats

            (a)        When you receive a telephonic threat, you SHOULD:

  1. remain calm
  2. listen attentively to what the person on the phone is saying and record as much details as possible

iii.        call (021) 959 2100 immediately after you have ended the call
